It wasn't just soldiers, but also civilians using bicycles as military cargo carriers in Vietnam, bicycles were also used as cargo carriers through the jungle by the Japanese during WW2 in the Malay Peninsula culminating in their successful conquering of Singapore. These movements were seldom under direct enemy fire.
The Canadians did not ride their bicycles ashore on D-day.
