But this is far closer to an ongoing service. It provides the platform for bringing all that data together and quantifying it. Definitely not possible in the traditional standalone software paradigm.
you do have a valid point about hardware, it is theirs and they should be compensated. i know some have said $5 is not much but i think it is too much actually. i recently subscribed as an elite customer of CycleMeter. it is $10/year. far better in price but missing the other aspects that Strava has.
