I have taken trains a few times into Chicago. I would definitely like to make a longer journey on one.
I've done Philly to Seattle
via Chicago three times. The second two trips were to the start of bike tours. The Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle is a great ride if you do it at the time of year when it's still light when you pass through The Dells in Wisconsin, skirt Glacier National Park (saw mountain goats from the train) and make you way through the Cascades in WA during the final morning.
