I eat at Subway often, actually. I've grown so accustomed to buying bottled water that I hardly think about the scenario of just walking in and asking for tap.

My earliest memory of being charged money for water was at one of the old "Clock" restaurants -- a defunct chain -- in Detroit. I had been out on the bike and was thirsty, so I walked in and asked for a water and they wanted a nickel for it. Or maybe it was a dime, but I think it was just five cents.
