Skidding cars certainly are a hazard peculiar to winter, from
both forward and behind, so my rear view mirror is even more important for those unpredictable events. In addition, I ride a particularly safe and well-tended route in the outbound (reverse) commuter direction early in the morning.
With my studded tires I have been able to climb icy hills that the cars can’t.
