I use my manual pump first since it's easier at lower pressures. And if I mismounted my tire, I have a chance of catching it before it blows the bead or pinches the tube. It's also already out since I'll use it to put a little air in the tube to give it some shape before putting it in the tire.

I've got a ten year old mountain morph for my cargo bike. Usually max of 60psi. No problems, but I have to be careful in how I hold the handle or I can pinch my fingers.
