I had the same issue with my Apple watch, both Series 3 and 4. My son-in-law, on the other hand is somehow getting heart rate data into Strava through his Apple Watch (he doesn't have a ride computer). I believe this is because he uses the Strava app on the watch and starts his rides there instead of the iPhone. I never tried that because you can't use Strava's tracking feature when you start the workout from the watch.

I'm now using a Wahoo heart rate strap which works fine.

It's frustrating and it seems like both would be easy for Strava to fix. And it's not like folks aren't requesting these features.
