I'm more likely to avoid a road because of traffic considerations (hell, about a mile away, the road outside my door has a 30mph, slightly uphill, 1/4 mile section with no shoulder - if I'm riding alone, I'll go two miles out of my way to avoid that stretch).
The traffic on that road gave me the willies. I didn't even notice the cracks.
