The virus does damage the lungs and reduces their ability to oxygenate the blood. There are people who a year after contracting the virus have not recovered and continue to experience headaches, fatigue, and other symptoms. Of course a year ago there was no vaccine available and so except for the idiots going into public indoor spaces without a mask, it was not self-inflicted as is the case at this time.
