Gary worked for Bicycling, although his pieces were ghost written. Bicycling Magazine started off as the Northern California Cycling Association newsletter, published in San Rafael. Rodale Publishing bought the small magazine, moved it to PA, and it went national. Gary went with it, since he was friends with the original editorial staff.

The first article I ever had published was a story I had written about the Repack races. Gary offered to take it to the Bicycling offices. They bought it, and my own writing career began.
