There's a statute of limitations on how long you can wait to formally press charges, no idea what that time limit is in your area, but I wouldn't let someone get away with theft like that. "Good kid" or not, a thief is a thief, and once the police get involved that should light the proverbial fire under his rear to get disclosure.
