I have the TRP Spykes on my Surly Ogre which are the MTB equivalent to the Spyres, and while I think they’re the best mechanical brakes out there, hydraulic brakes are still much better, especially on a road bike IMO. Most MTB riders prefer mechanical brakes because there’s a good chance if something goes wrong they can possibly fix them on the trail, where a hydraulic failure almost certainly means “no more brakes until I get home”.
