It's difficult to understand why this is. The great Blizzard of '78 was 37 years ago. So, an entire generation of suburbanites are too young to remember it. So, why the panic at the grocery store?
Anyone with any common sense would surely know enough to have a few food items on hand, as well as batteries, flashlights and lanterns, and at least one battery powered radio. One of the emergency radios that can be hand cranked is perfect.
Or just keep your phone and laptop computers changed (unless you expect a full day of no power).
