Yeah it's a POS compared to a real road bike but at the same time for the type of riding most people actually do it makes more sense than other new bikes in that price range, for instance a ****ty next brand MTB thing.
I suppose it's not so bad for the people just doing short rides here and there, plus there isn't the hassle of dealing with poorly installed derailleurs. The last time I was at WalMart I took a look at the bikes and almost wept at how bad the assembly was on the MTBs.
