I don't much care for it either. You've got to work at getting it off the outside of the chain. Usually these days I wet a rag in solvent and wipe down the chain. Takes a fair bit of time. Helps to be generous w/the solvent. Easier to wipe the chain clean
before putting it onto the bike.
If using White Lightening like the OP, then I'd soak the chain in solvent to strip off all the existing lube and start fresh with the White Lightening.
