Neil, did you try running diagnostics on the drive? Each major manufacturer has a diagnostics utility. The only catch usually is that it can't be connected to a RAID controller in any RAID mode. And I don't meant SMART, but actual manufacturer's diagnostic. It could have told you if the drive has problems and it reads the drive's internal log of read/write and move failures.
