All the time. I had detours that would add 4, 10 or 21 miles to my 3.8 mile direct route. I'd arrive at work and someone in the elevator might comment on the get-up: "Oh, did you ride your bike to work today? How long does it take you?"

I'd say: "Oh, about 90 minutes."

Puzzled look. "I thought you lived in town."

"I do. Where does it say I have to take the most direct route to work?"
