Yeah, wearing jams will make a much better impression than wearing activity-specific clothing.

You're posting in Road - are you actually road cycling or what? What are we talking about for ride times and/or distances? If you're talking about half hour excursions on the MUPs, wear anything you want. If you're talking multiple hours, it makes sense to dress a fool. If you want something somewhat technical but you're too self-conscious for Lycra, look in to some commuter gear from any of a variety of cycling apparel manufacturers.
