The clutch thing doesnt bother me as I just pulled the RD back with one hand and pulled the wheel up with the other. Not a huge deal at all.
The shifter...its a little plasticky...but it can be opened up and serviced to an extent. I plan on taking the money I saved and getting an XT shifter for $45. That should solve all the problems.
