Bikes: Too many. Giant Trance X 29, Surly Midnight Special get the most time.

For hardtail mountain bikes at this price points most bikes are more similar than not. You'll get a serviceable drivetrain, some inexpensive but also serviceable hydraulic brakes, a heavy and mostly nonadjustable coil spring fork. Unless you're getting a particularly good deal, I'd stick to a major brand (the Giant or the Cannondale) and either pick a less expensive bike like the Talon 3, or increase your price point and find something with a 1x drivetrain and air sprung fork. A local shop offers a fair amount of value over an online sale that's useful to take into account--they will be fully assembled at pickup, and will offer additional support.
