It's funny where a random comment, photo or web link seen on the internet will end up leading me. The Neil Peart photo above led me to reading online the first three chapters of his first travel memoir, here:

The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa

Here he is in Cameroon in 1988.



This is almost wholly a portrait of the people and places of West Africa. There's very little talk of music or cycling. But, when he does speak of these two things, it's sorta funny how differently he treats them in these chapters. He's very careful about his words when discussing the riding, often using quotes around terminology. But he does the opposite in regard to music, not at all worried his reader knows what he's talking about when using musical jargon.

He is fascinating.
