Ok, trying to go by memory here, but the LED on the Varia will blink purple when in pairing mode. I think you need to hold it down for 2 seconds or so, but it sounds like you figured out that part. I had to search Google to figure out the light network and the key was Varia as light first, create the light network second, and Varia as radar third. FWIW, I have an 830.
