I've used Channellock type pliers to remove a few Helicomatic freewheels. Works pretty well. A lot easier than several stuck Suntour freewheels I've had.
Just saw this and yes, that'd probably work - last night I did almost the same, put a hose clamp around the ring and turned that with a spanner. Was a doddle, now I can rebuild the wheel with a hub that I can sell with confidence.
