We got a gadget of sorts - the Bissel spot-bot (pet version). Essentially it has two tanks - one filled with a cleaning solution, the other tank is where it puts stuff it sucks up. It sprays the cleaning solution on where the pet made a mess, and then you use the thing to scrub and suck up the excess liquid. Repeat until clean. It does a really decent job of cleaning up cat barf on rugs and upholstery. I had to get it out over the weekend because a cat had barfed in my chair in the living room.
