With a smartphone, there are options to download various free bike computers. I currently use one called Urban Biker, and keep my phone out of site during a ride. But it logs things like miles traveled, time, average speed, much more, and displays route maps. I log that data later, but it also preserves it, for easy reference. Basic and doesn't require the resources of bigger apps such as Starva. Works excellent for my needs.
