I have a Retrax roll top cover that I butt up against the rear tire so the bike isn't going anywhere....but to answer your question, it is always a good idea to secure the rear wheel in the bed. I have only used this method on my FatBike when I'm too lazy to put the bike rack into the hitch for a quick trip to ride. I would not use this method on my road bike.
