Yes, I have put a bit of dish soap along a rim edge to help like that.
also, putting a new tire in the sun to get all warm helps sometimes
plus, there is a technique that can help, as in this youtube vid


I think most of us have done what you did, some tire/rim combinations can be a real chore. The technique in the video really does help, as by squishing in the tire towards the middle of the rim, we tend to gain just those few mm's that make the impossible, possible. its good to practice it in a nice warm , not rushed environment, so if you have to deal with it on the road, you'll know how to deal with a tough tire mounting.
