This article from Branford Bikes has me confused about mixing Pre-2001 8Sp Shifter with Post-2001 9Sp shifter:

But if I believe what I've been reading elsewhere, apparently I can run a post 2001 9sp with my older shifters.
It's just labeled 9s, so I don't know the year. All 10s Chorus/Record are new cable pull. All 9s Chorus/Record are old pull

And you can not run post'01 9s with your older shifters unless you modify them. That's what Branford is telling you. The pre/post '01 cable pull is different. (Edit) One uses a 1.4 actuation ratio, the other 1.5
