I've had pretty bad experiences with normal fenders in the city, where my bike just stays on the street for long periods and gets tossed around.
AKA the fenders always end up rubbing on the tire. The special kind of « indestructible » plastic gets somehow warped and stays that way, etc. The stainless parts somehow end up rusting. We have a very harsh winter here.

My hacked front fender does a really good job and cost me around 0$.
For the rear, I'm going to end up picking up a Zéfal attach-to-seatpost fender and see if it's any useful.
