Square taper is ok but you have to service it and it can wear out. I've never done anything to the Campagnolo Ultra Torque on my Seven in 40,000 miles. The Ultegra 6600 deal on the other bike got cleaned and lubed once in 35,000 miles and it's still quiet/perfect.

When I toured cross country in 1990 I had a cartridge bb. Thing might have been 4 pounds. Anyway it started clunking pretty bad because the outside of it had deformed or worn away from the massive watts applied to it. I borrowed a hammer and I had a screwdriver and I took it apart at a motel and wrapped electrical tape around it and forced it back in. It worked!

One of my friends had his bb come apart and damage the frame. We made it to some small town shop and they were able to get it working somehow.
