I think my main affection for the square taper is that it was used for 100 years and, in that time, all cranksets worked with all bikes assuming you had a spindle of appropriate length. Sure there was the ISO vs JIS difference, but you could make one sort of work on the other. There weren't a million standards. Yes, they would round out the crank if they weren't properly torqued and definitely added weight, but all the different standards and lack of backwards compatibility now just annoys me.
