Here in the north, all we have are turkey vultures. They're really shy--I have never seen one feeding on the ground except at an extreme distance. When I rode through Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi the winter before last and saw black vultures (like these guys) for the first time, I was really surprised at their boldness--they'd just keep eating their dead armadillo or whatever while you rode past them a few yards away.
