Just looked up your state law. Helmets are only mandatory for under 12 years old.

To be honest, if I'm riding slow enough for a child to keep pace, I'd be tempted to not wear a helmet. I probably would still wear it, but I'd be tempted, knowing that the risks are a lot lower than they are at the normal speeds I operate.
