It reminds me of the Star Citizen video game. The devs have received millions from backers, the game isn't even nearly finished and they are releasing extra content that the backers are paying literally thousands for on top of what they have already spent so that at some point in the future they might be able to play this game built by mega rich developers.
Such is the risk of being a backer. I've been burned as well in other crowdfunding, and although I didn't invest a cent in the Helix, I do hope it succeeds.
Hopefully it will pave the way for better versions down the road, and we all stand to benefit.
