In addition to avoiding the extra work of dismounting/remounting the front, there's also frugality and vanity at play - I want to get my money's worth out of the tires, but I like to try different tires and I don't like being mismatched on the bike, so 1f:2r is the best compromise for me.
My latest wheel build has mismatched spokes and nipples. A first even for me. When I ordered the 12 spokes I was short, I failed to specify silver. Last time I bought spokes, black was not an option
