I use a mirror, but still shudder to think of plugging my ears. They're an important part of my input. I sometimes know the position of traffic behind me without looking, if there's gravel on a shoulder or painted lane lines. I like the reassuring sound of tires on the dashed center line, giving me lots of room. And I like being generally aware of my surroundings, on or off the road.
