This particular bike has a carbon fork w/ alloy steerer tube, but my other Cannondale bike has a carbon steerer tube. The shop just adjusted the fit and lowered that stem a bit, and it now has a single spacer above the stem. I'm wondering if I need to bring it back in and have them cut it down, even though it's only 5mm.
An alloy steerer tube most likely has a star nut instead of an expansion plug. You could take a look to make sure, but I'd be very surprised if it didn't. Therefore the instructions about placing the expansion plug vis-a-vis the stem clamp don't apply. Also, even if it did have an expansion plug, my guess is that it wouldn't be needed to be placed to support the stem clamp anyway.
