I HATE my trainer when I'm riding it, but LOVED it today when I got out for 48 mi w/3k' of vert. Those interval sessions really paid off.
The only time I'll spend more that 45 min on the trainer is on a weekend when I need to get the saddle time and the weather's too uncooperative. Otherwise, it's short focused workouts: Tabata intervals, tempo, recovery and technique drills.
