I normally extend the front fender so that it runs past the lamp in the front of the rack. The rack helps in the extension as the fender extension can be tied to it. However tyrion does not use a fender which suggests riding in fair weather only.

Incidentally, when I mounted lamps to the side of the wheel, I usually got more spray problems than for the central location over the fender. The commercial mounting by the crown is not an accident - it is just a very good place for a lamp. Extending it to the front of the rack is just following farther the same idea.
