Just revisionist arguments. It was simple marketing or propaganda to say that it represents 'honesty'. The website claims the origins date back to the 19th century when in fact it goes back centuries before (1335 on Wikipedia). It's impossible to separate the politics from the symbolic meaning of the hand.
