My Gazelle and Schwinn world tourist were chosen for their practicality and ride qualities after long deliberation over wide range of choices, The Schwinn Continental was for nostalgia as it was my first "real" bike, but also makes a practical if somewhat limited commuter. The Ross was purchased new for recreation back in the 80s when I jumped on the MTB band wagon. The Raleigh, Robin Hood, and Flying Pigeon are because I like vintage 3 speeds.
One can have more than one criteria or primary for choosing a bike, and still use it for commuting.
