My first coach, Dmitriy, who coached UCI world tour racers, was dead set against racing early season races in the cold air. He did not want us sucking in cold air and irritating our lungs. For example, there was the new years day Mount San Bruno hill climb. He hated that race due to the chance of cold air.
The protective layer of mucus in the lungs tends to thin as endurance athletes get in better shape. Hence, some athletes are more sensitive to cold air and get asthma. You may need an inhaler. Then you can be like Froome.
