I always assumed that women's races were shorter, due to inherent "bathroom concerns", and female anatomy, etc. Might be a fun way to boost ratings though. We already sat through Bob Roll wiping his butt at the '87 Tour (see 38:20). He was the first American sportsman ever to be shown on TV doing this.
How could seeing some women racers answering the call of nature be any worse?
