I think that at least some of the tapered headset adapter sets require a 44mm bottom bracket bearing size...not quite 1-1/2" size, but larger than typical 1-1/8" size.

Most good XC forks are available in a straight steer tube version. The Suntour XCR air fork is, and various Manitou and Rock Shox forks are as well. Some of the hard core ones are available only in tapered, but there is a good variety offered with straight tubes. What exactly are you seeking (in a fork)?
