I'm having a hard time understanding why the LBS had difficulty sourcing something so common. I ran a bike shop for a few years, and sometimes we'd have supply issues around late July and August when the distributors were getting low on stock, but this time of year, the warehouses should be well stocked.
May be that your LBS has a strained relationship with their suppliers, not a good sign.
