I think it's great to see somebody riding a bicycle no matter what they are wearing/riding or how fast/slow they are going. At least they are out there and not watching tv or youtube videos or posting worthless drivel on some inane forum somewheres......

people always bring up the whole football jersey comparison as if it is equivalent, but i think there is an important distinction to be made...wearing a team jersey when you are participating in the sport itself is different than wearing that same jersey while at a bar or on the couch watching that team compete.
i've never seen anyone wear a team kit to watch a cycling race, but have seen many many people wearing football jerseys on a sunday before/during/after the game.

The nearest equivalent to cycling I've heard is some New Zealand rugby fans who'll tell you they won't wear an All Blacks jersey because they haven't earned it; this is clearly not a universal rule, because the All Blacks replica jersey is the single best selling item of rugby-related clothing in the world.

I see plenty of people wearing their pro team/international kit when playing pickup soccer games. Same applies to touch rugby games, pickup basketball, etc etc. Those pickup games are the equivalent to cycling's weekend club rides, which is presumably where most non-competitive cyclists will wear team kit.

I wear my Euskaltel jersey because I like the bright color and my wife is Basque. It keeps me in good favor if you know what
i mean. I wear ugly off color socks and non matching shorts and helmet just in case people start to confuse me with a Pro....
C'mon people, and we wonder why people have the opinion of bike weenies the way they do?

So with all the ugly jerseys out there, why do people hate so much on pro team kits like SaxoBank, BMC, Sky, etc? In larger cities, its not as big a deal and people embrace all sorts of jerseys but in smaller cities its either your team race kit, ugly organized century jersey, or bland generic jersey...
Unfortunately most seem to be club-cut for people whose six-pack stomachs come from drinking a lot of them.
Bike companies also have jerseys some of which are attractive. I really like my Lynskey era Litespeed jersey with the head-tube badge on front, and Campagnolo Prodotti Speciali jersey.
Most of the pro-team uniforms are ugly, although I wouldn't object to wearing one which was looked good and did not feature a bike company or fishing tackle maker.

it doesn't bother me if someone wears a pro kit, i just don't. I also find it strange that people who wear a Cannondale jersey, but ride a Trek. That's just me though..

Hmm. I don't associate Cannondale kit with Cannondale bikes - maybe because a lot of it is pretty generic. Don't really associate Specialized shoes with Spesh bikes, either....

Of course it's right. Being on sale is the single most correct reason to buy and wear cycling clothing. Screw all this criticism of what people wear. If it looks good and can be had cheap, I'll wear it, pro kit or whatever.

Honestly, that's how I obtained all of the pro team kit that I wear. I'll gladly ***** myself out a tad while commuting for a well-made five dollar thrift store jersey.
I'd hesitate to wear it on a group ride, simply because it's a hot button for some people, and I'm usually too non-confrontational to be a troll without a good cause behind it. I could give a rat's ass if anyone else does though.
(Admittedly I did snicker to myself at the guy that I saw wearing a rainbow jersey on a bike that looked like a municipal rental type bike. Also laughed at the guy weaving home from wherever wearing both bermuda shorts and a TT helmet. Same reason.)

same reason for not wearing an nba jersey for pick up basketball or painting ones car in f1/nascar livery. just seems a bit over the top to emulate the appearance of the pros

It's like the drug culture. Quit complaining about the user and go after the dealer.
