Last year I flirted with 32 mm tires and a Dos Eno 17/19T freewheel on the alternate side - but the other week I restored my 2002 Mercian Vincitore to the configuration I’ve used the most, 16T and 18T fixed cogs, 28 mm Paselas and the SKS fenders I first fitted it with in 2003. Then I rode Julius all weekend. No matter what other bikes or how long I’ve been on them, when I ride this one it feels like home to me.

I can't compete with the elegant beauty above me (and our rear gates don't help) but I built this up this morning initially using 48 x 18 and then swapping the rear cog to a 19 to get a tighter chain on this vertical drop-out alu' frame with a steel fork. After a six month lay off I'm starting a new job next week with a 12-mile each way commute and I think this gear will be OK for the couple of lumps along the way. The chainset is a Chinese alloy eBay special and I'm using Tektro levers and Shimano BR-451 calipers. I'll fit some fenders tomorrow but as they were on it when it was geared that should be a doddle and for peace of mind I might use a new 1/8th chain

I sincerely hope you have an easier time with them than I did on this one. Fourth time I've installed VO fenders on as many bikes and this time they fought me way more than any other installation.
I can usually get a set installed with good fender lines in a couple of hours, these took at least 4.
And I still have work to do since the end of the front stays are way too close to the axle nuts

My recent build. I can at least ride it now, but the bars will be replaced soon.

Yes, I am thinking about getting a set of tall "Stingray" type bars for it.
