Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I like underbiking in the form of riding the road above on 25s but don't care much for riding blue MTB trails on drop bars and 32s.

I never doubted you abilities to complete the ride. I think finishing in 6 hours is going to be tough, but a lot of it will depend on the terrain. I hope you have a great ride. May the Spirit of Gravel bring you joy, and carry you swiftly and safely to the finish.

That has not been my experience. The so-called gravel roads loved by some cyclists have always been nothing more than off-paved-road dirt roads. Persistent car traffic made them so.

The difference between gravel and dirt was pretty apparent in the Unbound this year - an early section of dirt was mudified and sunk a lot of riders.
The result of rainfall on dirt roads varies widely with the composition of the dirt. In the hills near me, the native dirt is primarily decomposed granite with very minimal clay content. As such, it doesn't get very sticky when wet, drains easily, and dries quickly. Other areas with more clay content in the soil will hold more water on/near the surface for longer, and is much more sticky. I'm not sure what all was the in dirt at Unbound, but that was ridiculous.

I would. Soon as I do some upcoming labs I'm going to insist on a hematologist referral. My former PCP has been poo-pooing my chronic low RBC count anemia for years, so I've dumped him and got another guy.

This varies widely by area. Around me, encountering a vehicle on a dirt road is a very rare occurrence, and would most likely be Forest Service or Fire personnel. In more rural parts of the state, it will be different.

Correct. In my current locale I would probably have to go out of my way to find a dirt road, but in my previous locale, just 75 miles south, a 2 or 3 mile ride could easily put me on one.

Breaking news.

Having to replace the oldest of our HVAC systems. Price was less than I expected, only a mere two Ultegra Di2 level bikes. They even offered a 10% discount if we paid by check or cash. Whoohooo!

Got some Shoe Goo to repair an old mtb shoe where the front had completely separated from the sole. Glued it yesterday and used 3 pair of Vice Grips to hold it while it cured. Going to look at it now and maybe even wear that pair on the mtb this week if it worked.

I need something for my old Sidis, which are separating from the heel. Fortunately, the new pair I bought a month or so ago, which originally caused some weird pains, now seem to have broken in and were plenty comfy for long rides. At the moment I'm using the old ones on the trainer, since I figure if the sole comes off completely while I'm riding ITG, I can just get off and walk up the 3 steps to the house, vs having to either jury rig them by the roadside, or make The Call Of Shame.

Nah. I like our dirt the way it is. Most of the time, we can ride the day after a rain, and there won't be any trail damage.

Good question!

I imagine we have a checkbook for our personal joint account, but my wife would have that.

I actually have 4 business checking accounts and use checks regularly for business expenses.

I looked at the repaired shoe and it seems pretty solid. I want to ride the mtb on Wednesday so I'll find out how solid then. It's the first time I've used this stuff but it comes highly recommended.
