Yes, but that was a quite common practice using mafac halfhood-brakelevers:

https://images.delcampe.com/img_large...65/898_001.jpg

Actually, the main difference to Eddy's PX10 back then is, that I fitted higher gears than Eddy Merckx used (compare the respective cranks' inner chainrings / below).

Eddy Merckx obviously used 52/42 chainrings here -> Eddy Merckx (1966) (at the same time, in 1966, average joe buys his off-the-shelf PX10 fitted with standard 52/45 combination...)

Even 52/42 is what we call a 'hero's crank' in Germany nowadays... and it's the then standard 52/45 combo on my PX: deliberate knee destruction for pride and superhero reputation.

I'm considering to move to a smaller 42 teeth inner ring.
Only to keep my PX10 as close as possible to Eddy's, of course...

Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for historical accuracy.

The addiction and the therapy

This is the one that started the addiction, back in '75. Was bought to ride in the "Pepsi 24 hrs Marathons" of the day in Central Park. Rode in many, sadly the mind was willing but the flesh was weak.Best outing was 315 in 24 hrs, a 5 mile course. I was taught many a lesson on these rides by an older gentleman(60+) on a Flying Scot. This was bought new by me and still owned. While not correct, the past is the past. It is therapy for me, the big ring is a Stronglight 56.

That's quite an interesting paint job. Don't you think you should paint the rear brake caliper green?

Might try it on a pair of mafac racers, trying to learn how to anodize.

Here's the latest iteration of my c. 1975 PX-10. Added a 37 T inner chain ring (procured from Red Clover Components and thanks to forum members for helping to source this) and a Brooks C15 Cambium saddle. The saddle did not require any breaking in and seemed to fit perfectly from day one.

Picked up one of these them there Frenchie bikes this morning. From what I gather from the internets, it's a late 60s model w/ triangular riveted head badge and BB oiler, and type 1 decals (please correct me if I'm wrong!). Paint condition is pretty rough, but it's intact, and original components shown include Stronglight 93 crankset, Stronglight BB, Stronglight Competition headset, AVA stem, MFAFC brakes (not marked "Racer"), seat post, Brooks Pro saddle (would it have had an Ideal?), Lyotard pedals. Seller also included original MAFAC levers, Simplex FD, and Simplex downtube shifters. I'll likely try to build it back close to original spec, but the wheelset might be the challenge.

At one time you had so many old tubular wheelsets that you were giving them away. That's how I got these.

Nice, Frenchie! Yeah, that's mainly why I tend to hoard--you never know when you'll need something! I do have a rear tubular with Mavic rim and Exceltoo rear hub, and a Mavic arc-en-ceil rim laced to an early Shimano Uniglide hub, which I could unlace and build with a Normandy front. But then there's a set of Mavic arc-en-ceil rims laced to Phil Wood hubs and Tufo Cyclocross tires in my stash. Hmm, might have to try those.

1973 PX10E.. I think, but it has plane lugs. Campy brakes, derailleurs and seatpost. Clement del Mondo tires. Tire savers. Pretty much the only photo I have. Photo taken in summer of 1974. I rode up California Hwy 1/101 and back. Notice my touring gear-set.... NOT! Standard 52/45 front and 14-21 rear.
And here all these young ones keep asking for lower gears... what a bunch of sissies!
Bike stolen in 1984. I got a PGN10 12speed with 501 tube and clinchers to replace.. not as good a ride.

I've finished for now the PX-10 shown in #359 above (which is likely a 1969/70):

Before:

After:

Certainly, not an attempt at historical accuracy as far as parts go. Original brakes, BB, headset, and crankset. The Super LJ shifters and FD came with the bike, and I had a rear Super LJ in the bin. Wheels are Tufo 30mm tubulars on Mavic rims and Phil Wood hubs. Brake levers and hoods are a style I like the look of. Belleri bars and no name French stem, which is the one part that I should probably replace, but it's what I had on hand. Lyotard Berthet pedals, but I'll likely ditch the cages and straps. Shifting is very smooth. Test ride was favorable. Brakes didn't even squeal too badly! I did do some touch up paint--to the top tube, in particular, which mostly looks good from a distance. Rear chrome cleaned up very well but front fork chrome is pretty cloudy.

I've posted a thread about this bike a month ago or so, but here is my '81 PX-10. Absolutely love it. Have some non-aero Spidel brake levers that I will be putting on one I track down an Atax stem and Philippe Guidons drop bars.

'81 PX-10 - Album on Imgur

Sorry, it's on Imgur, I didn't want to have to resize all the photos so I could put them directly into this thread.

Looking good. I am happy to have contributed to this worthy project. Please put a bag on it for some stinky cheese and a baguette.

Order a set of Testor's enamel touch up paint from Amazon.com (approx. $25. shipped), comes with a brush, spend an hour touching up the white, black, gold and it'll really look sharp.

Well, it didn't take very long for me to fiddle. The PX-10 is now sporting clincher wheels (Weinmann concave rims, Campy HF hubs, 28mm Pasela tires) and hammered Honjo fenders. I also took the clips and straps off of the Lyotard pedals, but can't say they're particularly comfortable that way.

That looks really nice, @nlerner. Broken record: What does it weigh, and how does it ride? OK, never mind the weight.
