Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It seems like there should be a happy medium between a different city every three miles and a 500 square mile city.

I was just surprised you said you live in actual LA because most of your ride pictures appear to be out in the middle of nowhere.

Most of my ride pics are from out of the city. The hills/city limit is actually about 200 feet from my door. My usual Tuesday ride meets in the City of Santa Clarita and we generally ride east out of that city's limits.

Some of my club rides and solo rides are in the Santa Monica mountains which is an unincorporated area. Or from home I can be on the roads in the San Gabriel mountains pretty quickly.

Riding in the city of L.A. sucks for the most part. The valley where I live used to be better but crowding and psycho drivers have made it less appealing, or maybe I'm just tired of those streets. I hate going over the hills into L.A. for any reason, by car or bike.

Over the years several former cites in the Portland metro got annexed by Portland and are just neighborhoods now.

Is that a map of good places to grow buckeye? Can't be very accurate if ALL of Oregon is included but none of WA or NorCal

I don' t know. Just googled buckeye tree range. On the same search I also see this nifty map. Could be a stocking stuffer for an arbor mapfan.

I don't know if we in NorCal have Ohio buckeye, but it's currently "avoid the buckeyes in the bike lane" season. Which comes just after "run over olives in the bike lane" season.

I see the cutoffs are at state lines, so the all brown states are states that didn't care enough to pay for the "Can you grow a buckeye here?" studies

In Portland at this time of year it's watch for the buckeyes and all kinds of wet leaves that are slicker than ice

There are so many midwesterners in Phoenix that Chicago dogs are widely available. Then we have Sonoran dogs too, I guess you could say it's a hotdog hotbed.

But I've never seen a chili-slaw dog on offer in PHX

Can't say I've ever seen any olives while cycling. I have seen (discarded) oranges, apples, etc.

Acorns, walnuts, slippery leaves are the tree threats.
